DESCRIPTION: This map is a reduced version of Arnold Colom's 1655 map, from the first world maritime atlas. (See #395 in The Mapping of the World by Rodney Shirley). Shirley describes that map as "a double hemisphere map surrounded by six robust statuesque figures typically representing Day and Night and the four elements; each except for Mother Earth, proudly unclothed." Also notable in this map is the depiction of California as an island and the partial mapping of Australia and Tasmania. New Zealand and many of the Pacific Islands are also charted.
