  • DESCRIPTION: Signed and titled in pencil. Between the years 1964-65 John Ross and his family lived in Romania and then Yugoslavia where John taught printmaking through a United States Information Agency program. It was during this period that he and his artist/wife Clare Romano helped to advance the collagraph technique, in part serendipitously, when the supply of copper plates for his printmaking classes suddenly ended. John Ross improvised, developing overnight a new class syllabus based on the materials available – and his students were introduced to the collagraph printmaking technique. The collagraph matrix is made by gluing together different materials, often cardboard, and different textures, fabric, etc., to a firm backboard. When the composition is completed, the matrix is waterproofed and then inked and printed using an etching press – almost like printing from a collage. John Ross and Clare Romano were very instrumental in the advancement of the Collagraph technique through their years of teaching this method and their own artistic advancements in developing this printmaking technique further.
