  • DESCRIPTION: Engraved by D. Edwin after the painting by C. W. Peale. <br><br> David Rittenhouse (April 8, 1732 – June 26, 1796) was a renowned American scholar and scientist. He was an astronomer, inventor, clockmaker, mathematician, surveyor, public official. Rittenhouse was a member of the American Philosophical Society, where he served as librarian, vice president and president. He was also the first director of the United States Mint serving from 1777 to 1789. He was also a member of the Royal Society of London, a rare feat for an American of the period.
