DESCRIPTION: A fine example of the Dutch version of Sanson's influential map showing the Spanish and French possessions in the southeast. The map extends from the southern most part of Virginia to the coast of what is now southwestern Texas. First issued by Sanson in 1657, the map was the first to use the name L. Erie in an atlas, although it is pushed 2.5 degrees too far south.
