DESCRIPTION: Signed within lower left image "Fred. S. Cozzens 88-2." The United States Life-saving Service were often called storm fighters, and storm warriors. When the storms arrived to wreck the ship along the coast these men would leave their stations and battle mother nature with muscle and determination to save lives. The roots of the service date back to the eighteenth century volunteer efforts in Massachusetts. In 1848 the federal government gave the men equipment, and expanded the service again in 1871. By 1915 the USLS had saved the lives of 186,000 people.
