• DESCRIPTION: Drawn by Lemuel S. Blackman. W. Sharp lith. Boston.

A view of Dorchester, Massachusetts. The First Parish Church can be seen just off center, on the right. It was designed by Oliver Warren and was erected in 1816, only to burn to the ground in 1896. The church was rebuilt the following year. Beside it, just to the right, is Lyceum Hall.

The First Parish Church of Dorchester was established in 1631 by Puritan colonists. It was a multifaceted building, hosting town hall meetings, the first tax-supported elementary school in the new world and, of course, religious worship. Pictured is the fifth reincarnation of the building.

Lyceum Hall was another important structure in Dorchester's history. Erected in 1838 and opened in 1840, it served as a community center where lectures, demonstrations, dance classes and other public gatherings took place. It became a temporary place of worship for Irish Catholic immigrants during the 1870s while Saint Peter's Church was being reconstructed. Father Peter Ronan held their first meeting there in 1872. Lyceum Hall was demolished in 1955.
