DESCRIPTION: Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is an important political figure in Mexico's history, though his legacy is anything but positive in the eyes of the country. Mexico was rife with struggles following their independence from Spain. Corruption was prominent. Powerful individuals took hold of or led their favorite candidates into presidency and the seat was never held for very long. Santa Anna himself was president multiple times, but his promise to unite Mexico never became a reality. His defeat during the Texas revolution and the Mexican-American War, coupled with the sale of Mexican territory to the United States, were stinging losses for the country.
