First state before background added. Unsigned. Edward Hagedorn (1902-1982) was born in Berkeley, California, and spent most of his life in San Francisco. He studied briefly at the San Francisco School of Fine Arts and was a member of the Society of American Etchers. During the Great Depression he worked with the San Francisco area WPA producing a number of remarkable etchings, drypoints, and metal relief prints. Most of these images are dark symbolism against the coming of WWII. His images of this period are strong and effective antiwar images. He experimented with printmaking, sometimes printing the image as an etching or drypoint and others inking the plate as a relief image and printing it that way.Unsigned. 20th Century Subjects , Historical , World War I
