• DESCRIPTION: Ch.Ph.invt. H.D.lith; Chez Aubert, gal.vero dodat; Imp.d'Aubert et de Junca gal Colbert. Caricaturana is a series of 100 lithographs, numbered 1-100. They first appeared in Le Charivari between 1836 and 1838. They also were sold in a bound album format with the title "Les Robert Macaires." Each image was printed on heavy wove paper and was offered uncolored for 45 francs and hand colored for 55 francs. Text below title reads, "Monsieur, est-ce bien a vous que j’ai l’honneur de parler? – A moi-même, Monsieur. – J’en suis charme! Vous avez la un bien joli chien!….. En usez vous?…. Parbleu! Monsieur, vous devez connaitre ma famille, les Macairbec? Nous sortons tous de Brest, mon aieul servait le Roi sur ses galeres, mon pere et moi appartenons aussi a la marine. Des malheurs judiciaires, des persecutions politiques nous ont plonges dans une affreuse debine et je n’hesite pas a vous demander un secours de dix francs….. – Monsieur, je ne donne pas aux personnes que je ne connais pas. – C’est juste, c’est juste! Dans ce cas, prêtez moi dix francs."<br><br> Translation - "Do I actually have the honor of addressing you in person, Monsieur? -- Indeed, Monsieur. -- I'm delighted. You have a really nice dog with you! Would you like a snuff?... Why of course! You must know my family, Monsieur, the Macairbecs? We originate from Brest, my grandfather served the king on board his galleys, my father and myself, we also have naval connections. Judicial misfortune, political persecution have plunged us into a terrible decline and I don't hesitate a moment to ask you for ten francs assistance -- I don't give to people I don't know, Monsieur. -- Quite right, quite right! In that case, lend me ten francs."
