Septemtrionaliora Americae a Groenlandia, per Freta Davidis et Hudson, ad Terram Novam.

  • ARTIST: Frederick de Wit

  • MEDIUM: Copper plate engraving,

    DATE: 1675-c.1680.

  • EDITION SIZE: Image size 19 1/8 x 22 1/4" (485 x 565 mm) plus margins.

  • DESCRIPTION: A fine chart of Hudson Bay and Arctic Canada that first appeared in Wit's “Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas.” Witt based this chart on Van Loon's chart of 1666. Cartographically, it shows some of the earliest, tentative mapping of the region. Based on Van Loon's earlier chart of 1666. it includes Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait, Baffin Bay, an enlarged Baffin Island, James Bay and Buttons Bay, and across the sea to the western coast of Greenland. Richly embellished with two elaborate cartouches, one in Latin and one in Dutch, rhumb lines and a sea battle near Hudson Strait. This apparently is an unrecorded state of the map with "Fol. 28" added outside the upper right neat line but before Baffin Islands named “James ou Isle de Jacques.”
