A confidante to George Washington, Lafayette was one of the first Frenchmen to aid the American cause. He played a seminal role in the Battle of Yorktown and his efforts to secure French aid helped decide the course of the Revolution. Following the War he returned to France where he became a leading figure in the French Revolution. Lafayette was a beloved figure in both France and America and he came to symbolize the ideals of liberty and the hope for equality. Based on a painting by Matthew Harris Jouett of Kentucky, who was commissioned by the Kentucky legislature.
