A plan of the Royal Dockyard at Chatham, surveyed and drawn by John Milton (active c. 1743-76) and shipping by John Cleveley the Elder. Cleveley spent most his life working as a shipwright, becoming an artist relatively late in life. He specialized in painting ship launches at the Royal Dockyard in Deptford. Milton was a minor marine artist whose son, Thomas (1743-1827), appears to be the dedicator of the plate. It is assumed that the father was the primary artist, as Thomas would have been a pre-teen when this plate was published (Thomas would become an engraver later in life, however). This plate is one in a set of the dockyards.
