  • DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century lithograph of the State Alms House, Bridgewater, Mass. During the 1840s, the number of helpless poor in Massachusetts increased. Too large a problem to be solved on the local level, the Board of Commissioners of Alien Passengers recommended in 1852 that the state establish three almshouses. Accordingly, institutions were established at Bridgewater, Monson to the west. This view depicts the alms house at Bridgewater as it was around 1855.
