The Battle of Bunker Hill ended with the British defeating the American forces, but not without significant loss. The British were led by Major General William Howe and Brigadier General Robert Pigot, while the Americans were led by Colonel William Prescott. With limited ammunition, the Americans waited for the British to near their fortification before firing, allowing them to deal significant damage to their enemy. The assault caught the British off guard and forced them to regroup. When their ammunition dwindled to impractical numbers the Americans faced the British in close combat, as seen in this engraving. By the end of the battle the British had around 1,000 men dead or wounded. The Americans had around 450.
