  • DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of the Interview of Howe's Messenger with Washington, captured as a steel engraving and colorized to highlight the details. Virtue & Co. Publishers, N.Y. 1861. On July 14, 1776, the Howe brothers attempted to negotiate with George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. General William Howe and Admiral Richard Howe arrived in New York with a massive British fleet, hoping to either conquer the city or achieve reconciliation with the Continental Congress. They sent a letter offering a pardon to those who pledged allegiance to Britain, but it was addressed to "George Washington, Esq." and was rejected by Washington for not recognizing his rank. A second letter addressed to "George Washington, Esq., etc." was also refused. Washington agreed to meet one of Howe’s subordinates on July 20, but the discussion was brief as the Howes lacked authority to negotiate terms. A month later, Howe's forces invaded Long Island, leading to a series of defeats for Washington's army, who retreated across New Jersey into Pennsylvania. The conflict continued for six more years.
