  • DESCRIPTION: Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, and politician of the Elizabethan era. Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world, (First by an Englishman) from 1577 to 1580. Drake’s fame and fortune was brought about by his skillful seamanship and highly successful piracy. During his circumnavigation of the globe he made a number of profitable raids on Spanish ships and ports. Drake's increasingly frequent attacks during the 1580s were an important factor contributing to Philips II's decision to launch the Armada against England in 1588. Drake served as vice-admiral of the English fleet which defeated the Armada.
