  • DESCRIPTION: J..J. Barralet direxit. Lauson sculp. William Penn (1644 - 1718) was a Quaker who founded the province of Pennsylvania during the British colonization of North America. Penn was ahead of his time, in some regards, and set in place several principles that would later be adopted by the American Constitution. One example is freedom of religion, which attracted immigrants from all over Europe as they fled persecution. Penn is most remembered for the treaty he made with the Indians at Shackamaxon, where he paid for land rather than taking it through force, and was made without need for oaths (such things were against the principles followed by Quakers). There are many depictions of Penn forming this treaty under an enormous elm tree.
