His artistic career started at a young age and caught the attention of the Royal Academy by the time he was 14. His first exhibition would come a year later, when his work was featured in a show put on by the academy. Often referred to as "the painter of light" his works were fairly controversial in his early years. His sense of composition and color greatly contrasted the traditional works of the time and conservative critics did not take kindly to them. He was well acclaimed among the more contemporary critics, however.

Turner was a prolific artist and produced somewhere in the vicinity of 2,500 paintings and watercolors, and 19,000 drawings during his lifetime. Upon his death, he bequeathed many of his works to England.

This portrait of Turner, based off his self-portrait done around 1799, will be featured on England's 20 pound note as of 2020. Accompanying him will be one of his marine paintings.
