  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving was done in honor of Decoration Day, better known today as Memorial Day. The tradition was begun in 1868 to honor the servicemen who had fallen during the Civil War. Here Columbia, the embodiment of America, weeps upon the grave of a fallen soldier. The tombstone is left nameless to represent all who had fallen. A wreath reading 'In Memoriam' hangs over the edge of another tomb. In the distance stands Capitol Hill and the unfinished Washington Monument, the very entities so many men had fought and died for.
