This illustration was likely made to celebrate the coming New Year, where the artist hoped the world would settle and the people of America would accept and respect one another. He has portrayed two southern gentleman working together without regards to race. The weapons of war have been shattered and lay at their feet. In the doorway is joyful Northern gent, whom they greet like a brother.

The pedestal on which the anvil sits reads "'They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks' - Isaiah, 11.4." A biblical remark about the end of war and the growth of prosperity and brotherhood. Signs on the wall read "'Strengthening the bonds of brotherhood' - Pres. Arthur"; "Dignity of Labor"; "The era of unity of interests, of harmony and good feeling"; "Industry, thrift, and enterprise"; and "New Orleans Central Exposition.
