DESCRIPTION: This political cartoon depicts the aspiring Democratic presidential candidate, John Hoffman, trying to sneak upon the White House with his cronies - William M. Tweed (Boss Tweed) and the corrupt henchmen of Tammany Hall, members of the Erie Railroad Ring, a Catholic archbishop, newspaper editors and unscrupulous businessmen. On the portico is President Ulysses S. Grant, calmly enjoying a cigar as he reads the newspaper. A poster on the pillar reads "'Let us have peace,' for another term," a comment about his second term run.
