A morbid reminder of what war really is, and how it is far from glorious.

This satirical cartoon is likely based on the Franco-Prussian War (July 1870 – May 1871), which was raging in Europe at the time of publication. A pompous skeleton sits upon his "War" throne, which is comprised of munitions and broken wagon parts. Behind him is death and destruction; cities burn, fathers die, children suffer.
