  • DESCRIPTION: S. Russel, del. Kell Bros Lith Castle Stholborn.<BR><BR> At one time this was the larges bridge in the world. The total length of the bridge when completed was 9,144 feet. It was also the first bridge to span the St. Lawrence River. Its engineers Robert Stephenson and Alexander MacKenzie faced many issues including the freezing of the St. Lawrence River during construction. <BR><BR> The bridge opened to passenger rail traffic in 1859, was renamed in 1897 when the bridge was renovated to the Victoria Jubilee Bridge and returned to the original name in 1978. <br><br>
