• DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of the Battle of Camden - Death of De Kalb, captured as a steel engraving and colorized to highlight the details. Published by Johnson, Fry & Co., New York. 1868.

The Battle of Camden marked a significant setback for the American forces in the South, as Major General Horatio Gates suffered a devastating defeat due to a critical error in deployment. Despite the valiant effort of the Continental Regulars from Maryland and Delaware under Major General Johann de Kalb, Gates's army collapsed, clearing South Carolina of organized American resistance. This opened the way for British General Charles Cornwallis to invade North Carolina. However, approximately two months later, Major General Nathanael Greene took command of the Southern Department and played a pivotal role in the Carolinas, directing operations that would eventually turn the tide against the British.
