"Oct. 19, 1864. Ride Thr. T. Shenandoah V.-Union (Gen. Sheridan, Com.) Loss: 5995 - Conf. (Gen. Early, Com.) Loss: 3000 & 30 Guns." Sheridan's counterattack against Early's army was victorious but costly in terms of lives. This would be the last major engagement fought in the Shenandoah Valley. Between 1884 and 1894 Kurz and Allison published thirty-six chromolithographs of Civil War battles. These prints were valued for their naive artistry. The compositions are stylized, showing both Union and Confederate armies in panoramic "fishbowl" settings. This, together with an unpainterly treatment of human figures, lends an effect similar to the graphics seen in the earlier lithography of Currier & Ives. 18th-19th Century Subjects , Historical , Civil War
