  • DESCRIPTION: Therond, del. Outhwaite, sc. The bronze equestrian portrait of George Washington in Union Square is the oldest sculpture in the New York City Parks collection. It was modeled by Henry Kirke Brown (1814–1886) and the installation on June 5, 1856 drew thousands of spectators. At that time the sculpture stood, facing west, in a fenced enclosure at the junction of Fourth Avenue and East 14th Street.. As part of the redesign and reconstruction of the park in 1929, the sculpture was moved to its present location within the square's south plaza. In the background of this scene is the Everett House. (1848-1908), one of 19th century New York's most fashionable hotels.
