  • DESCRIPTION: Boston as seen across the Charles River from Cambridge. The fine view appeared in the December 1787 issue of the Columbian Magazine. The Columbian Magazine was one of the earliest successful magazines published in the United States. The view itself is based on Thomas Pownall's larger view produced before the Revolutionary War. One noticeable change between the two is now the Stars & Stripes is flying instead of the Union Jack. Not noted but James Trenchard is believed to be the engraver.
