After a painting by William F. Cogswell. Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the sixteenth President of the United States. To preserve a part of Lincoln's spectacular legacy, in 1869 the U.S. Congress commissioned a portrait contest to paint Lincoln's likeness, with President Ulysses S. Grant choosing the winner. Although Grant chose this painting by William Cogswell, making it the official White House portrait, another losing submission from that contest ultimately became better known - the sitting portrait of Lincoln deep in thought, painted by George P. A. Healy. This engraving is based on Cogswell's official painting and hangs in the White House today, along with the Healy painting, which was purchased by Lincoln's son. This print appeared in "The White House Gallery of Official Portraits of the Presidents". Facsimile signature. Printed chine-colle. 18th-19th Century Subjects , Portraits , Abraham Lincoln
