This is the largest print depicting the dramatic winter crossing during the Revolutionary War, which led to a morale-raising American victory over the Hessians at Trenton the day after Christmas, 1776. Leutze did three paintings of this subject,. The first was destroyed in Dresden, Germany, during WWII. The second was for this engraving and was done for Goupil,. The third is the largest and most famous and hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

CONDITION: Engraving in good to very good condition, with additions of later hand coloring. The frame is an 1850’s carved and compo molding with a patriotic center head ornament containing cannons, a shield and military pennants. Smaller side ornaments and star corner pieces. All the elements on the frame are the originals, the frame was restored and re-gilded.
