  • DESCRIPTION: J.H. Bufford's lith. Boston. <br><br> The U.S.S. Varuna was a Federal warships commissioned during the American Civil War. She fought against Confederate forces at Forts Jackson and St. Philip on the Mississippi River. Varuna was ultimate sunk on April 24th, 1862 while trying to bypass Confederate forces to attack New Orleans in what is now known as "Farragut's daring nighttime dash."
