  • DESCRIPTION: Baily, Sculp. Collier, a vice admiral in the Royal Navy, provided support for General William Howe's landing at the onset of the Battle of Long Island - August 22nd through the 27th, 1776. Also known as the "Battle of Brooklyn", it was both the first, and the largest, battle in the American Revolutionary War. Though the battle was a huge loss for Washington's army, he was able to lead an overnight evacuation to Manhattan while Howe's troops were halted and settling in for a long siege.
