  • DESCRIPTION: Fort Oswego was an important trading post for Great Lakes trading and was established in 1722, first by the French who built a block house, than by the British in 1727. New York governor William Burnet had a fort built at the site in 1727, strengthening the British presence on the Great Lakes. In 1757, during the French and Indian War, this fort was captured and destroyed by the French.<br><br> This view show the fort that was destroyed. In 1759 another fort was constructed on the high right bank.
