DESCRIPTION: Proof before title. Remarque portrait of Abraham Lincoln in lower left. The image depicts Admiral Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay (August 5, 1864) on board the USS Hartford. During the battle he decided that he could witness the action better from the ship's rigging. The monitor USS Tecumseh struck a mine and quickly sank which gave pause to the battle. It was at that time that Farragut shouted “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead and laid the Hartford along side of the ironclad vessel CSS Tennessee which eventually struck her colors.
