DESCRIPTION: A 19th-century perspective of Meriden Britannia Co's Works, Conn, U.S., captured as a wood engraving and hand colored to highlight the details. The Meriden Britannia Company was established in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut. They produced wares utilizing Britannia metal, which is a type of pewter alloy with a silvery finish. It was an inexpensive and popular method of creating kitchenware, such as silverware, teapots, dessert trays, and candlestick holders. The factories also manufactured Albata and German silverware. Sterling silver was added to the list when they purchased Wilcox & Evertsen in 1895.. Meriden Co. was purchased by the International Silver Company in 1898. <br><br> Meriden Company's wares frequently turn up on the second-hand market today.
