The Montauk Steamboat Company, Ltd. was located at Pier 13, East River. It was established in 1853 and operated steamboats between the City and the eastern end of Long Island. The boats ran up and down the LI Sound. The company was sold to the Long Island Rail Road Company in 1899. Soon after the LIRR acquired it, the line it purchased the steamboats Montauk and Shinnecock, and later the Nantasket, Orient and Long Island.

The entire fleet consisted of the Shinnecock, Montauk, Orient Point, Shelter Island, Greenport, Sag Harbor, Manhanset, and Block Island. Each boat ran from New York on Alternate days, providing a daily service.

According to this time table the line also served eastern Long Island ports from New London, Connecticut. Pictured on the cover is the S.S. Orient. Also shows a map of Long Island with the LIRR and Montauk SS routes.

The Shinnecock, the largest of the fleet was 249 feet long and had 84 staterooms. She was a new boat with 2,500 horsepower engines and a speed of 17 miles an hour. The Montauk, a sister ship to the Shinnecock, had a length of 184 feet with 1,500 horse power engines making a speed of 15 miles an hour.
