Engraved by G. B. Lewis, Paris. Proof before title. "Capt.n John Franklin" is written in pencil under the image. Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) was an English Rear Admiral and Explorer who led the 1845 expedition in search of the northwest passage. The two vessels on this ill-fated journey were the Erebus and The Terror which left England on May 19, 1845, and were last seen by British whalers north of Baffin Island in July of the same year. Search parties were sent out in 1847 when no word had been received by any members of the crew. 18th-19th Century Subjects , Portraits
