  • DESCRIPTION: Printed in oil colors, by Currier & Ives, 115 Nassau St. N.Y. In 1879, St. Julien, a California farm horse, set a record mile with 2:12 3/4. For the next six years these three trotters would best each other, shaving fractions of seconds off each previous record. Maud S. was even taken out of retirement in order to regain the title of America's fastest. This she captured and held in 1885, when she attained her topmost speed - one mile in 2 minutes, 8 3/4 seconds.
