DESCRIPTION: A highly decorative and informative map of the United States as it was in 1845, the year that Texas joined the Union as the 28th state. It shows the progression of states and settlements westward. Shows a large Missouri Territory, Iowa is labeled but shown without definitive borders. Wisconsin is noted as a territory. Texas has an early configuration sometimes referred to as the "strawberry shaped Texas."<br><br> In the Atlantic below the cartouche are 14 inset maps, Vicinity of Washington, Vicinity of Detroit, Vicinity of Chicago, Vicinity of Pittsburg, Vicinity of Charleston, Vicinity of St. Louis, Vicinity of Cincinnati, Vicinity of Mobile, Vicinity of New Orleans, Vicinity of Baltimore, Vicinity of Boston, Vicinity of Philadelphia, and Vicinity of New York and the southern tip of Florida.<br><br> On the left is a chart of the Chief Rivers of the World, a double hemisphere map of the World, the Principal Mountains of the World, and a facsimile of The Declaration of Independence. Along the bottom are many vignettes of key events in history, including; Landing of the Pilgrims, Battle of Lexington, Battle of Bunker's Hill, Washington's Farewell to his Army, and a large pictorial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4th, 1776. In addition are portraits of the first Presidents of the United States.<br><br> Engraved on steel plate by J. Wells, Brooklyn.
