• DESCRIPTION: A highly decorative advertising label for Formosan tea.

Taiwan (aka Formosa) began to cultivate tea for commercial purposes during the mid 19th century. These colorful labels were produced to be applied to the sides of boxes of tea meant to be shipped to the U.S. and European markets.

These labels are printed on thin rice paper and an ink that is highly susceptible to water. Once applied to a box, that was it. The print is extremely fragile which likely explains their rarity.
