• DESCRIPTION: This exceptional Revolutionary War-era engraving of John Paul Jones is an early proof before the title, originally sketched from life by Jean Michel Moreau in May 1780. The portrait captures Jones in a striking, head-and-shoulders view, clad in his naval uniform. Engraved in fine detail by J.B. Fosseyeux in 1781 and published by Moreau near the Louvre in Paris, it reflects a likely encounter between Jones and Moreau, both Freemasons residing in Paris that year.

Adding to its unique appeal, this proof includes a handwritten annotation of “John Paul Jones” in the lower margin beyond the plate mark—a note likely made by an early collector to clearly identify the subject. Additionally, provenance notes from a previous collector, detailing the engraving’s origin, have been included within the mylar sleeve.
