  • DESCRIPTION: This print, titled Gilbert Mottier Lafayette, Depute d’Auvergne aux Etats Generaux de 1789 et Commandant de la Garde Nationale Parisienne (translated as Gilbert Mottier Lafayette, Deputy of Auvergne to the Estates-General of 1789 and Commander of the Parisian National Guard), was created by Charles Francois Gabriel Levachez based on an artwork by Jean Duplessi-Bertaux. It portrays Lafayette in a dignified left-facing profile, with a simple white collar in place of a lace jabot, a mature expression, and an upright posture. This classic portrayal honors Lafayette, a hero of the American Revolutionary War, who returned to France to serve as a deputy in the National Assembly and as commander of the Parisian National Guard. <br><br> Inscriptions credit Duplessi-Bertaux as the artist and Le Vacher as the engraver, adding to its historical authenticity and charm. This piece captures Lafayette's legacy as a pivotal figure in both French and American history. Multiple states of this print exist, and it is possible that this version was either cut down from a state with a larger sheet of text or may have been issued as a stand-alone piece, or even a proof. Further research could clarify which state this is, documentation remains inconclusive, and the necessary research has yet to be undertaken by museums or universities.
