DESCRIPTION: This small oval mezzotint portrait depicts Sir John Lisle (1610–1664), an English lawyer and politician who served in the House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1659. A supporter of the Parliamentarian cause during the English Civil War, Lisle played a prominent role in the political upheavals of the era. After the Restoration, he went into exile in Switzerland, where he was assassinated by an agent of the Crown in 1664. This proof before title highlights the craftsmanship of the mezzotint technique.
