DESCRIPTION: A very nice example of E. Belcher Hyde's wall map of western Suffolk County. The map is amazingly detailed. A key identifies improved roads, open roads, unimproved, private roads and drives etc. Towns and villages and neighborhoods are identified. Many large property plots and the owner’s names are given. The proposed Northern & Southern State Parkways are shown. Along the south shore barrier beaches are the proposed “Ocean Parkway or Fire Island State Pkwy.” And the proposed “Cap Tree Island Causeway”. Of early aeronautical interest is located on the western portion of map sheet five, along the Nassau County border and just east of Pinelawn is the Fairchild Airplane Manufacturing Co. along with the Fairchild Flying Field.<br><br> This particular map was issued two ways, in a bound, eight sheet “library format”, or joined, mounted in linen and on rollers. This example is one of the former and has survived quite well.<br><br>
ADDITIONAL INFO: Bound into green cloth hard covers with gilt title on front cover. Eight maps sheets, each measuring 18 3/4 x 30 1/2”. Printed in three colors, black, blue and gold.<br><br>
CONDITION: Good condition save for some occasional soft creases. Some staining from original numbered tabs. Original color.
