DESCRIPTION: The painting was originally entitled "Mrs. Schuyler Firing her Wheat Fields." Depicts Catherine Van Rensselaer Schuyler, the wife of General Philip Schuyler, setting fire to her fields at Schuylerville, New York, to prevent them from being utilized by the advancing British under General John Burgoyne. A small child clings to Catherine's skirt as she holds a thatch of burning hay. On the right a woman hurls a burning ring into the field. An African American boy kneels on the ground pulling a lit candle from a lantern. Engraved by Thomas Phillibrown
