The innkeeper, Mrs. Elizabeth Steele is shown offering General Green money and a hot meal to lift his spirits and support the revolution. The story of this print is that on the morning of February 2, 1781 A dejected General Nathaniel Green visited the Steele Taven in Salsbury, North Carolina. Steele, who was well informed about the war’s victories and defeats, was supposed to have given General Green, council, breakfast and two pouches of gold and silver coins assuring him that he and the Revolutionary cause needed the money more than she did.
