The events at Lexington and the North Bridge in Concord demonstrated that the localized militia could effectively stand against the professional British Army.<br><br> By the time the British retreated to Charlestown, they had suffered roughly 273 casualties, compared to the 95 casualties sustained by the Americans, signaling that a return to peaceful British rule was no longer possible.
