New Map of the World according to the New Observations.

  • ARTIST: Hermann Moll

  • MEDIUM: Copper plate engraving.

    DATE: c.1732

  • EDITION SIZE: Image size 7 x 11 1/8" (17.7 x 28.2 cm)

  • DESCRIPTION: A handsome double hemisphere map of the world with California shown as an island. In North America, both Baron Lahontan's fictitious R. Longue and Str. of Annian indicate the possibility of a Northwest Passage. Northwestern North America and northeast Asia are left blank and unmapped. Australia's northern coast suggests a connection to New Guinea, and the coastlines for Tasmania and New Zealand are incomplete. Above the cusp is a northern polar projection. This map appeared in Moll's "Atlas Geographus, or, A Compleat System of Geography, Ancient and Modern." London.
