  • DESCRIPTION: Tab 79. Anchusa officinarum L. (Common Bugloss). Historically used in traditional herbal medicine for its emollient and expectorant properties, the roots were also once sought after for producing a red dye. This engraving is from Plenck's scarce "Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum." This work was devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants. Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.
