DESCRIPTION: Signed lower left. <BR><BR> Illustrated in "Martin Lewis' Retrospective Exhibition: April 11-28, 1973" at Kennedy Galleries. <BR><BR> The painting is related to the etching that was produced in 1918 entitled "Above the Yards, Weehawken."<BR><BR> At the turn of the twentieth century Weehawken was a sprawling railroad yard with a number of ferry terminals that went into Manhattan. The painting shows a portion of the rail yards and the end of a major ferry terminal, likely the ferry that went to 42nd Street which stopped service in 1959. The painting is a wonderful work by Martin Lewis who is better known as a printmaker than a painter.
