DESCRIPTION: John Mix Stanley (1814-1872) was an important painter of Indian life and survey artist. This print is based on a sketch he made while accompanying the U. S. Pacific Railroad Expedition & Survey - 47th & 49th Parallels. This is plate 42 from the General Report whereby the topography and landmarks of this most northern American territory was explored and recorded in anticipation of a transcontinental railroad. Fort Walla Walla was built in 1818 as a base for British fur traders. It was the site, in 1855, of a major council between Governor Isaac I. Stevens of Washington Territory and about 5000 northwestern Indians - an attempt to convince the natives to cede their lands and make clear the way for the new railroad. The Indians were unconvinced.
